Aha! Mobile For Product Managers On The Go

Product managers are busy people. Their days are packed — in and out of meetings, status updates with the team, and talking with customers. They want a way to track progress against their product plans quickly, no matter where they where.

How might we build a mobile solution that allows product managers to access their features and communicate with their team on the go?

User: Product and Project Managers.

My Role: As Lead Designer, I worked directly with the product manager, lead engineer, and CEO. I created a design roadmap that spanned initial research, user flows, wireframes, prototyping, usability testing, and visual design implementation. I also worked with the product marketing team on a new mobile app landing page, app store screens and go-to-market mockups.

Scope: Four-month deadline to develop the entire mobile app experience.

Process

Research

Reviewed existing solutions, customer emails, tweets, and feature requests from our ideas portal.

Ideation

What desktop features are must-haves for the mobile experience? As a design and product team, we ideated key micro-moments that captured the most important features that needed to be included in the mobile app.

Wireframes

I met with the core team regularly to walk them through design options and made recommendations on the direction.

Usability Research

To evaluate the app for product managers, we relied on 7 validation tests with pass-fail metrics. This allowed us to gain a deeper understanding by combining both qualitative and quantitative information.

Although users were able to pass most of our test scenarios, there were problem areas. Discussions with users revealed that the home list view was hard to distinguish, selecting multiple field values was unclear, and some participants struggled when adding a comment.

Outcomes

"It's very clean, nice and simple"

Feature creation increased by 17%

Session length increased by 27%

Next steps: Track KPI's, continue to listen to users and keep improving experience.
